Tampa Bay Rays to Play at Steinbrenner Field in 2025
New Home Schedule for the Tampa Bay Rays
The Tampa Bay Rays will relocate their entire 2025 home schedule to Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida. This decision follows severe damage to Tropicana Field caused by Hurricane Milton in October of last year. Steinbrenner Field, with a seating capacity of 11,000, serves as the New York Yankees’ spring training facility.
Stadium-Related Relocation Reasons
Repairs to Tropicana Field are estimated to cost approximately $55.7 million and will not be completed in time for the 2025 season. While the structure of Tropicana Field remains intact, hurricane damage has rendered restoration efforts expensive. Eighteen of the stadium’s 24 roof panels were damaged, resulting in rainwater and wind causing further internal deterioration.
Steinbrenner Field: A Suitable Alternative
Steinbrenner Field is not only the Yankees’ spring training site but also a convenient option for the Rays. The team opted for Steinbrenner Field over the Philadelphia Phillies’ stadium in Clearwater. This smaller venue offers Rays fans the opportunity to experience 81 MLB games in a more intimate setting.
Principal owner Stuart Sternberg emphasized the benefits, stating, “This is the best opportunity for our fans to enjoy Major League Baseball in a more personal environment.” The agreement with the Yankees is expected to generate around $15 million in revenue for the Rays, providing financial support for the upcoming season.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed support for the decision, underscoring that keeping the team in Tampa remains a priority. He remarked, “We will find them a place to play.” This commitment highlights MLB’s dedication to Rays fans and players.
Facilities at Steinbrenner Field
Steinbrenner Field features modern amenities and facilities that meet MLBPA standards. Designed for year-round sports activities, the stadium requires minimal upgrades to meet MLB regulations. However, its outdoor setting may pose challenges, particularly during the hot summer months.
The Tampa Bay Rays’ move to Steinbrenner Field for the 2025 season is a necessary step in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton’s devastation. This relocation not only provides the team with a temporary home but also offers fans a unique and engaging baseball experience. Through this plan, the Rays aim to maintain their momentum and strengthen connections with their Tampa-based fan community.
